Mar 29, 2012 - I purchased a Garmin nuvi 1300 series in Dec 2010. Maps are outdated and I would like to know how I can get (purchase) updat. Step 4) Reconnect the device to the USB cable and run Garmin Express again - to get the map updates. NOTE: This can take a LONG time - depending on your internet and computer speed. Step 4a) Find and click on the 'Map Update' section in Garmin Express. If you own a Garmin satnav, you will need at a certain point a new set of maps or a map update. If your device is old, probably the best solution is to put your hands on a new Garmin satnav with the LMT extension in description. LMT stands for LifeMaps and Traffic – so if you buy a such a device you will have free maps for life (life of the satnav, not yours ). Get the gps, register it on Garmin website, make an account, and get the latest updates for free. I also explained how to update Nuvi gps systems with Lifetime Maps in. Every year there are available up to four updates for every map. A second solution for Garmin satnav owners (if you have a recent model or you don’t want to spend money on a LMT gps) is to get free maps from free sources. The best choice is OSM maps –translated as. At OSM maps are free, created and updated by users and volunteers across the words. Of course they are not perfect, but they are for free, and you can get updates that are not found on official maps. You can get free Garmin maps for Europe, Africa, Asia,North America,South America and Oceania. Follow the steps: Go to the OSM website and choose the map type (in most cases choose generic routable ),then select your country or continent. Check the Enable manual selection box, then drag with the mouse (holding left button pressed) a square over the country/continent. After that press Download map now, and you will get a free Garmin map ( IMG file) that you can place on your Garmin device or memory card. A similar website were you can get free Garmin maps is Cloudmade.Following the same steps (choosing continent, region, country) you will get free maps that can be used as soon as you copy them to your satnav. I just tried update my free lifetime maps using the program Garmin Lifetime Updater that is on this PC but that app keeps giving an error msg of something like 'no servers available at this - time try again later'. That led me to try downloading/installing 'Garmin Express' but that will not install because as I understand it requires at minimum Windows Vista to run now and this PC is XP. The only PCs that I have are running XP. I called Garmin and they cannot help me, saying they no longer have any update methods to run on XP. I suppose I could try to find someone I know that has more recent version of Windoze but that is a major pain in the butt trying to find someone and impose this on them. I tried to ask Garmin if they had a relationship with any particular stores out there that could do the update for me but they said maybe I could try Best Buy Geek Squad but that they would most likely charge me a fee. Any suggestions for how to get this done using my XP PCs? Garmin Nuvi Updates FreeOr any stores that sell Garmin gear that would do this for me? I can't recall for 100% where I bought the nuvi 5 years ago but I suspect it was from Newegg (not a walkin store). Thanks Boyd you are my hero - it worked! Unbelievable that the person I spoke to at Garmin did not even mention this:-P Do you know if I need to keep the old 'Garmin Lifetime Updater' on the PC to use the GarminMapUpdater.exe? I'd like to uninstall/delete it but am wondering if the GarminMapUpdater.exe looked at that in any way. Also - I did update my Garmin once, a few years ago, when XP was still supported. So it hasn't been a full 5 years without an update. Free Update Maps On Garmin Nuvi 1300![]() Can't recall how long it has been though. I think last time I was able to update with full map like East of the Mississippi but this time it was only a portion of the NE USA, not enough space. I have an 8gb 40mb/s Ultra SDHC card I was thinking of trying to see if I could get all of North America, do you think I could use that card and the GMU exe to write to that? Thanks again. I would highly recommend that you keep the program you got from the link posted my Boyd. Garmin MapUpdater hasn't really been supported by Garmin for many years now so you never know when it's going to disappear off their website. I have kept the downloaded program on my PC for years now just in case, after all it's only about 4.5 MB so it's not taking up a lot of space. Although a lot of us use a 16gb card in our Nuvi models your 8GB card should allow you to install the whole North America map for use on your 1300. But on the other hand if you don't need the whole map file there may not be a really good reason to install it all. It's great that you got it working. The last time I tried it would hang part way through the download and I finally gave up and used Express. If you look at the link posted, it shows two versions on the Nuvi 1300. Am guessing that you have the version that included the full North America map along with a lifetime update card. I used to have a Nuvi 1350 which was like the other version that only had the 'lower 49' map and no updates. I have wondered about whether Garmin is strictly enforcing the new 2 year update policy. Some people have reported that they are. I have a couple old units myself (Nuvi 3550 and Dezl 760) that have not been updated for a long time so maybe I will try someday and see what happens. Have pretty much given up on them though, my phone is much better with the Garmin StreetPilot app which looks just like a Nuvi. I would highly recommend that you keep the program you got from the link posted my Boyd. I'm asking about the old 'Garmin Lifetime Updater' program and subdirectory tree that I used years ago (which no longer works). ![]() I want to be sure it is safe for me to uninstall that. I'm wondering if perhaps the 'GarminMapUpdater.exe' might be looking in that old directory, or some kind of registry key that that program created, that tells it my Garmin is legal/kosher or not. I doubt that it looks at anything else on your computer. Update eligibility should be determined by the unit ID of the GPS while it is connected to your computer. If you delete it, you should be able to install again from this archive of Garmin software. Looks like the last version of LifetimeUpdater is from 2012: But if you are concerned, just leave it there. Surely it doesn't take up any significant amount of space.;) Not a space issue, but a future confusion issue for me. 6 months from now I am not going to remember all of this and if that app is still on this PC I might try to use it again! I am just going to uninstall it now & only leave the new one here, thanks for your help. Just curious. Do you plan to never update beyond Windows XP? I am very reluctant to update things too. I'm on Windows 7. Two of my Macs are still on 10.8.5 which Apple no longer supports. But I never liked Windows XP and there are some pretty serious security concerns with it now. Nope, I will never update these 2 PCs that I am currently using. Have a bunch of reasons why not to, including the time/cost/issues that I would then have to deal with fixing things & removing bloat that would come with upgrading etc. Heck my old desktop PC only has 1gb total ram, not upgradable, and has enough problems just running XP with some of today's apps, not to mention so many websites with too much graphics and scripting on it for it to handle - new Windows probably wouldn't even run on it, let alone have drivers for some of its hardware. Buying something new, sure whatever OPSYS it comes with I'm not going backwards (probably not even possible). Although I will say that this PC (laptop) came with VISTA when I bought which I felt was crap so I downgraded it to XP Pro. Your Nuvi 1300 needs a Micro SD card and it sound like the one that will not fit in your unit is a regular sized SD card. ![]() Garmin Nuvi 1300 Lifetime UpdatesA full sheet of specs for your Nuvi can be found at Thanks. I bought a card that was the right kind a few years ago and was going to try it but got sidetracked. Thought I had left it all this time in the back of my desk behind this laptop but what I picked up there tonight is not the right thing. Don't know what happened to the other one, have to keep looking. 991 front license plate mount. I would like to get the whole continental USA again even though I rarely drive outside the NE anymore. Not sure how that works to update that (assuming I can find the right card) but might try it if I can find it (or maybe I will buy another one). Not a priority for me I guess but it took me so long (friggin' YEARS) to bother to update my Garmin at all I felt like keep going tonight while I had the time/motivation!
